Inmate death under investigation in Bluefield

BLUEFIELD, W.Va. — The death of an inmate this week while in the custody of Bluefield police is under investigation, city officials said.

Bluefield City Manager Dane Rideout confirmed the Wednesday death to several media outlets Friday evening. He said it was an ongoing investigation.

The inmate was in a holding cell operated by the city. He was found unresponsive during the morning bed check. He was taken to Bluefield Regional Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

The cause of death is not yet known, Bluefield city attorney Colin Cline told the Bluefield Telegraph.

The man’s name has not been released.
