Student Success Summit underway in Morgantown

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — More than 400 educators convene in Morgantown this week to explore ways to improve lifelong learning systems.

The Student Success Summit, sponsored by the state Higher Education Policy Commission, offers 50 professional development sessions conducted by educators from across the state.

The theme of the program this year is “The future is now: Full Steam ahead,” a main focus will be on innovative techniques educators can use to encourage students studying science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics.

State School Superintendent Dr. Steve Paine said the partnership between secondary education and higher education is key.

“It’s very important for us to understand what higher education needs in our graduates and how that translates to successful employment,” Paine said.

State HEPC interim chancellor and Community and Technical College Chancellor Sarah Tucker said collaboration provides an opportunity to improve.

“Our instructors, our faculty and our teachers have to be talking to each other to make sure we’re doing what we need to do for the betterment of our students,” Tucker said.

The Student Success Summit was held in Charleston for the first two years, but out grew the facilities and has been held in Morgantown for the last seven years.
