After program-best season, Midland Trail reloads for 2019

HICO, W.Va. — Twelve wins, a spot in the state semifinals and an undefeated regular season. By any measure, 2018 was the most successful season in the history of the Midland Trail football program that dates back four decades. Now, the Patriots are tasked with replacing a large and decorated senior class that was led by Austin Isaacs, Nathan Hanshew, Morgan Ferris and Cordell Lesher.

“The brotherhood that we had last year was like nothing I have ever been a part of,” said Midland Trail senior running back/defensive back Colton Yoder. “I loved those guys and always will, just like I do this team.”

“I told these guys that we are not replacing them. You are not going to replace them. Make a name for yourself,” said Midland Trail head coach Frank Isaacs.

“Some young guys are going to step up into those spots I think,” said Midland Trail senior wide receiver/defensive back Jonathon Stark. “This year I think our seniors might be at the same level as last year.”

Isaacs knows the challenge of replacing an impressive senior class is daunting, but it does have one positive.

“It was kind of boring last year,” Isaacs said. “They (the seniors) knew what they were doing and I didn’t have to help a whole lot. It is exciting this year because these kids are raring to go and they are eager to learn. There is a different feeling.”

Junior Christopher Vines is the new man under center as the starting quarterback for Trail. He replaces Austin Isaacs, who accounted for over two thousand all-purpose yards a year ago.

“He may not be able to ad lib and make something out of nothing like Austin, but I think Chris is going to be a more polished passer,” Isaacs said. “I think Chris can be a very good leader in his own way.”

The Patriots allowed more than twenty points just once in thirteen games last season. Isaacs says for now, the Trail defense may be a step ahead of the offense until new skill players settle into their spots.

“I am excited to see those kids really develop,” Isaacs said. “We are going to have really good team speed on defense. We are very physical. It is exciting to see because that is the Midland Trail brand.”
