Mercer County students head back Thursday

MERCER COUNTY, W.Va. — Students in Mercer County will begin classes on Thursday, the first group of West Virginia children to hit the books this academic year.

Josh Wilburn, assistant principal and athletic director at Princeton High School, said opinions vary on the early start to the school year.

“Obviously, a lot of people would like to have a few extra weeks of summer, and you always have the critics of coaches, teachers and kids and everyone being burnt out,” he said. “For the most part, it seems like the kids and the coaches are excited to get back in the swing of school.”

Princeton High School held an orientation for first-year students on Wednesday. Wilburn noted there is excitement in the air.

“As busy and hectic as it can be, it’s nice to get back into the routine and getting back with our school family,” he added.
