Fairmont State student president faces strangulation charge following fight

FAIRMONT, W.Va. — A student leader at Fairmont State University faces a felony strangulation charge after being arrested Thursday.

Tyler Douglas Keller, 21, is the president of the Student Government Association. He allegedly started an argument with a second person, accusing the victim of stealing his cell phone before the altercation.

Keller allegedly pushed the victim onto a bed and began choking him with both hands. The victim struck Keller in the head with a glass wine bottle. The victim told authorities he shoved Keller out of the residence, to which Keller allegedly responded by breaking through the back door and continuing the fight.

Upon arrival, police notice Keller was bleeding from his head and the victim had blood around his neck.

Keller hit the victim in the ear, resulting in hearing loss according to the criminal complaint.

As of Friday afternoon, Keller is being held at the North Central Regional Jail.
