Roundup: Martinsburg nears 50th consecutive win, 10 unbeaten teams remain

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — A closer look at action around the state in the seventh week of the high school football season.

Bulldogs score 77, approach 50th consecutive win

Jarod Bowie returned three punts for touchdowns as Martinsburg won their 49th consecutive game, 77-0 over Spring Mills. MHS had a total of five special teams touchdowns in the contest.

Bowie also had two receiving touchdowns on scoring strikes from Elijah Banks. The Bulldogs (7-0) led 43-0 at halftime.

Martinsburg will go in search of their 50th consecutive win next Friday at Salem, Va. This is a new matchup on the schedule for the Bulldogs. Salem is 6-0 and is averaging just over 37 points per game.

Spring Mills (3-3) travels to Albert Gallatin, Pa. in Week 8.

Cabell Midland keeps pace atop Class AAA

Wake Forest commit J.J. Roberts scored four touchdowns as the Knights of Cabell Midland closed out their regular season home schedule with a 54-7 win over Princeton. Roberts rushed for three scores and threw for another.

Jakob Caudill eclipsed the 1,000 yard rushing mark for the season. The Knights led 54-0 at halftime. Jacob Wroten had a pair of touchdown runs while Stephen Hass added another scoring tote. Zach McCoy reeled in the touchdown pass from Roberts.

The Knights (7-0) will close out their regular season with three road games, starting next Friday at Woodrow Wilson.

Hartman fills stat sheet, Musselman rolls

Musselman junior Blake Hartman accounted for five touchdowns as the Applemen improved to 6-1 with a 62-6 win at Hedgesville.

Jacob Miller and Caleb Hardy had first half touchdown runs for MHS as the Applemen jumped out to a 42-6 halftime lead.

Devin Heath had the lone score for the Eagles.

Musselman will face a tough test in Week 8 as Wheeling Park (5-1) makes their way to Inwood.

Timberwolves improve to 6-1

Spring Valley found the end zone five times in the first half in a 40-21 win at Riverside. The Timberwolves led 34-6 at the break. Luke Christopher scored a pair of rushing touchdowns. David Livingston added another. Nate Ellis tossed two scoring strikes to Corbin Page.

The Timberwolves (6-1) visit St. Albans in Week 8 while Riverside (3-3) will host South Charleston.

Polar Bears win 20th in a row

Fairmont Senior scored all their points before halftime in a 33-0 win at Weir. Fresh off their bye week, the Polar Bears improved to 6-0 and extended the state’s second-longest winning streak to twenty games.

Junior signal caller Gage Michael tossed a pair of touchdowns and ran for two more scores.

The top-ranked Polar Bears will host Robert C. Byrd next Friday in the first of three consecutive home games. Weir (3-4) travels to Edison Local, Oh.

Payne scores five times, Poca stays perfect

Ethan Payne rushed for 312 yards and five touchdowns as the Poca Dots ran their record to 7-0 with a 56-21 win over Winfield. Payne has 29 rushing touchdowns in seven games.

Jay Cook and Toby Payne connected for a trio of scoring strikes as the Dots eclipsed the 50-point mark for the fourth time this season.

Poca will head to a bye week before wrapping up their home schedule against Scott on October 25th. The Generals (4-2) will host Sissonville next Friday.

Bridgeport starts fast to defeat Preston

Cam Cole accounted for 169 total yards and a pair of touchdowns as Bridgeport defeated Preston 45-14. The Indians jumped out to a 35-0 lead, cruising to their sixth win of the season.

Bridgeport (6-1) travels to Elkins next week before their showdown with Keyser on October 25th.

Mingo Central back on track with win over Nitro

Daylin Goad racked up 449 yards from scrimmage as Mingo Central defeated Nitro 56-34. Goad had three touchdown runs and three touchdown passes. Drew Hatfield reeled in 21 passes for 237 yards and two scores. Isa Scales had three touchdowns for the Miners (4-2).

Nitro quarterback Trevor Lowe had 243 all-purpose yards for the Wildcats (3-4).

The Miners visit Scott next week while the Wildcats enter a bye week.

Top-ranked Doddridge solidifies hold on top spot

Newly minted as the top team this week in both the MetroNews & SSAC Class A lists, Doddridge County ran their record to 6-0 with a 47-0 win at Gilmer County.

Hunter America toted the ball 15 times for 176 yards and a pair of touchdown runs. Noah Bumgardner, Dylan Knight, Reese Burnside and Simon James each added scoring runs for Doddridge. Jared Jones hit Brady Zellny with a touchdown pass to cap the scoring.

The Bulldogs travel to Ravenswood in Week 8.

Records fall as Greenbrier West collects fifth win

Noah Brown set a school record with 324 rushing yards as Greenbrier West improved to 5-1 with a 34-10 win over Pocahontas County.

Brown has 1,080 rushing yards in six games, making him the 22nd player in school history to reach the thousand yard mark in a single season. Brown had three scoring runs and his 324-yard effort broke Bryan Spitzer’s mark of 319 yards. That record held for 16 years.

The Cavaliers led 12-10 at halftime but scored 22 unanswered points in the second half. Cole McClung and Kaiden Pack also had touchdown runs for GWHS.

The Cavaliers travel to Richwood in Week 8.
