Scoring Summary: Iowa State trounces West Virginia, 38-14

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — West Virginia put up some initial fight without starting quarterback Austin Kendall, but ended up completely overmatched against Iowa State in the second half at Milan Puskar Stadium. The Cyclones scored 24 unanswered points in the second half for the 38-14 win.

Kendall went to the locker room after taking a hit from blitzing defensive back Anthony Johnson on a third-and-2 drop-back on the final play of WVU’s first offensive possession. Kendall walked off the field without being able to lift his right arm with an apparent shoulder injury. Jack Allison came in to play quarterback for the Mountaineers.

West Virginia kept even with the Cyclones until halftime before Iowa State began pulling away in the fourth quarter.

Fourth Quarter

Iowa State 38, West Virginia 14 (1:42)

Breece Hall punched in a 1-yard touchdown to add insult to West Virginia’s multiple injuries. Iowa State took over on Braxton Lewis’ midfield interception of Allison.

Iowa State 31, West Virginia 14 (6:54)

The Cyclones faced minimal resistance on a seven-play, 62-yard drive to put the game out of reach. Brock Purdy hit Joe Scates for an 18-yard touchdown that put the nail in the coffin.

Iowa State 24, West Virginia 14 (12:20)

Brayden Narveson’s 46-yard field goal extended Iowa State’s lead to two scores.

The Cyclones converted two third downs on the drive, and neither was a short one. Purdy connected with receiver La’Michael Pettway near the sticks on third-and-12 and third-and-8 completions.

Third Quarter

Iowa State 21, West Virginia 14 (9:39)

West Virginia will have to find a way to win without either of its starting cornerbacks.

Keith Washington has not played due to an undisclosed injury, and Hakeem Bailey was ejected following a targeting penalty on Iowa State’s go-ahead touchdown drive. Running back Breece Hall scored from 12 yards out on the first play following Bailey’s ejection to put the Cyclones in front.

Second Quarter

West Virginia 14, Iowa State 14 (0:28)

Jack Allison hit a crossing T.J. Simmons for a 9-yard touchdown right before halftime.

It was a masterful drive for the backup quarterback, who went 6 of 7 for 77 yards. He has receiver Winston Wright to thank for the lone incompletion, which would have been an interception in the end zone if Wright didn’t knock the ball away from Iowa State defensive back Lawrence White.

Iowa State 14, West Virginia 7 (6:32)

It was a double dose of bad luck for West Virginia on Iowa State’s go-ahead touchdown drive.

The West Virginia defense should have been off the field after stopping Iowa State on third-and-14, but an illegal hands to the face penalty on linebacker VanDarius Cowan kept the Mountaineers on the field.

Later on the drive, Cyclones coach Matt Campbell sprinted downfield trying to call a timeout before Iowa State faced a fourth-and-2 at the WVU 12. But the officials didn’t see him, and Purdy ended up barely gaining the first down on a quarterback sneak.

Purdy finished the drive with a 2-yard touchdown run.

Iowa State 7, West Virginia 7 (14:55)

Iowa State rebounded from the Pick-6 with an 11-play, 65-yard touchdown drive. The Cyclones converted a fourth down and third down on the scoring drive, with both coming on completions to big tight end Charlie Kolar. The Mountaineers will need to find a way to limit Kolar the rest of the way, if possible.

First Quarter

West Virginia 7, Iowa State 0 (4:29)

Freshman safety Tykee Smith scored his first college touchdown on a stunning 19-yard interception return for a touchdown.

Iowa State running back Kene Nwagwu bobbled a pass, which was then bobbled by Smith before he reached up to corral it and then made his way into the end zone.

Pregame

Iowa State will be without its top defensive player, safety Greg Eisworth.

The absence of Eisworth is significant as Iowa State’s defense is largely designed around his playmaking. Eisworth leads the Cyclones with 39 tackles.

Iowa State is also without its top defensive lineman, end JaQuan Bailey.

The most notable absentee from West Virginia’s lineup is running back Martell Pettaway. The senior running back is listed as available, but he’s on the bench without any pads minutes before kickoff. Pettaway is averaging 18 yards per game and has two touchdowns this season.

West Virginia is also without No. 3 tight end T.J. Banks, who has played sparingly this season. Wide receiver Sean Ryan, who was ruled out earlier this week, is being replaced in the lineup by Bryce Wheaton.
