West Virginia releases completed 2020 football schedule

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — West Virginia football fans will get some time off for trick-or-treating in 2020, while the Mountaineers will look to provide some treats of their own in their second year under Neal Brown.

With the Big 12 schedule completed, West Virginia was able to release next year’s full football schedule, which begins with a Sept. 5 game against Florida State at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta. The Mountaineers have seven home games and an Oct. 31 bye week. For the first time since 2016, all 12 games will be played on Saturdays.

“Once again, West Virginia will have one of the most competitive football schedules in the country in 2020 as it features 11 Power 5 opponents,” WVU athletic director Shane Lyons said in an official release. “Three home games in September and two each in October and November work out nicely for our fans to plan, and 2020 is our year to host five Big 12 games at Milan Puskar Stadium.”

The Mountaineers host FCS Eastern Kentucky on Sept. 12 in the 2020 home opener. That kicks off a string of three straight home games that will also feature Maryland (Sept. 19) and the conference opener against Kansas State (Sept. 26). The K-State game will also serve as West Virginia’s homecoming.

West Virginia’s first true road game will be at Texas Tech on Oct. 3.

The Mountaineers even got a favor from schedule-makers as they will have an extra week to prepare for Oklahoma, which comes to Morgantown on Nov. 7 following West Virginia’s Halloween bye.

The Mountaineers host Baylor in their Nov. 21 home finale, and finish the regular season at Iowa State on Nov. 28.

“This is a very challenging schedule, not only with the Big 12 Conference lineup, but also nonconference games against Florida State and Big Ten border-opponent Maryland,” WVU football coach Neal Brown said. “With the way the schedule is laid out, it gives our fans a chance to enjoy seven home games and a manageable road trip to Atlanta against a national-level opponent.”
