MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Representatives with Milan Puskar Health Right have proposed a plan to install containers for disposing of needles and drug paraphernalia in high-risk areas.
Under the plan, the organization would maintain the containers, which Milan Puskar Health Right is willing to pay $3,000 per box.
Dani Ludwig with Milan Puskar Health Right said homeless individuals often cannot pay the fine associated with carrying syringes.
“They’re just throwing them on the ground,” she added.
“I am biohazard-trained to pick up syringes and dispose of them properly. I would go out on a regular basis, clean out the containers, dispose of them, disinfect them and lock them back up.”
Morgantown councilmember Zack Cruze signaled support for three containers at locations yet to be determined. Mayor Bill Kawacki asked to review data on the success of these programs as well as hear testimony from medical professionals and law enforcement.
