West Virginia sportsbooks take hit with Nationals capturing World Series

CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. — The Houston Astros weren’t the only the losers on Wednesday night following Game 7 of the World Series.

According to ESPN Chalk reporter David Payne Purdum, the sportsbook at Hollywood Casino at Charles Town Races lost around $1 million on the Washington Nationals taking home the championship.

Located close to Maryland and Virginia and only 65 miles from Washington D.C., the casino was reportedly flooded with Nationals fans on Wednesday night for the game that resulted in the Nationals winning 6-2.

Hollywood Casino at Charles Town Races officials could not be reached for comment.

The editor of ESPN Chalk, Ben Fawkes, reported Thursday that a West Virginia bettor won $330,000 on the Nationals winning the series. In October of last year, the bettor reportedly bet $15,000 on Washington to win the World Series with 22-to-1 odds through the William Hill Sportsbook at Mountaineer Casino in New Cumberland.
