Huntington forces 7 turnovers in 44-13 win at Parkersburg

PARKERSBURG, W.Va. — Huntington’s defense clamped down on Parkersburg, intercepting four passes and recovering three fumbles as the Highlanders rolled to a 44-13 win at Stadium Field.

“We felt that (Bryson) Singer was a very athletic quarterback and we had to make him throw the football,” said Huntington head coach Billy Seals. “We did a nice job in the secondary disguising our coverages. We got some pressure on him and forced him to throw the football.”

Five different Highlanders has rushing touchdowns. Senior quarterback Tajahn Blackwell scored twice. Brocton Blair, Johronimo Mitchell, Diallo Mitchell and freshman Amari Felder each scored once.

“We thought we could get the ball in space a little bit,” Seals said. “We thought in between the tackles that Brocton Blair could get yards. And Ta’ did a nice job running ‘Q-Counter’ and running some zone reads.”

The Highlanders jumped out to a 20-6 halftime lead and rushed for 228 yards in the contest.

Parkersburg sophomore quarterback Bryson Singer was hampered by an injury suffered in the Spring Mills game. He scored on a 6-yard run in the second quarter but was limited to 122 yards of total offense. He did surpass the thousand-yard mark in rushing yards, making him the first PHS signal caller to pass and rush for a thousand yards in a single season.

Both teams are now 5-4 entering their regular season finales. The Big Reds will face Parkersburg South while the Highlanders will meet Spring Valley.

“It is going to be a good solid hard-nosed football game,” Seals said. “Both programs have a lot of respect for each other. Obviously if we can get to 6-4 it puts us in better position for seeding. It is going to be a tough task but I have full confidence in my football team in what we’ll be able to do next Friday night.”
