Snow, cold to move into West Virginia by Tuesday morning

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — All parts of West Virginia were expected to see some snow, ranging from flurries to several inches of accumulation, out of the weather system that was affecting the Midwest and the Great Lakes to start Monday’s Veterans Day.

Precipitation would begin as rain in the Mountain State by Monday evening, according to the National Weather Service, before changing over to snow ahead of dawn on Tuesday with falling temperatures.

“It’s a pretty strong cold front that’s going to be coming through. We’re likely to get some wind with it as well,” said Dave Marsalek, meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Charleston.

Generally, one to two inches of snow was possible in lower elevations to the west with amounts of up to 4 inches in the mountains.

“It’s going to start overnight (Monday into Tuesday). It’s probably going to continue through the late morning hours and then taper off in the afternoon. The mountains will see it continue into the evening and then probably into early Tuesday night,” said Marsalek.

In many areas, the snow would be the first accumulating snow of the season.

Detailed maps of multiple possible snow totals were available HERE.

“As the snow begins, both air and road temperatures will quickly fall to below freezing resulting in slick roadways,” the NWS warned.

“A few bursts of heavier snow may occur between midnight and sunrise resulting in very poor visibilities and further enhancing hazardous driving conditions.”

As of Monday morning, Winter Weather Advisories from the National Weather Service were scheduled to take effect late Monday in the counties shown in blue here.

Winter Weather Advisories from the National Weather Service were posted for Monday night into Tuesday morning for more than 30 counties in the eastern mountains along with western, central and southern West Virginia.

After snow Monday night, Tuesday night was expected to be a colder night.

“Your warmest temperatures for the day are probably going to be right when you get up (on Tuesday) and falling into the mid-20s by the time you get into your commute home for the evening on Tuesday,” Marsalek said.

Later Tuesday into Wednesday, “For most areas of the State of West Virginia, we’re looking at teens for the lows, the mountains probably a bit lower than that.”

Veterans Day started off as a mild day with temperatures in the 50s after a sunny Sunday in many areas.
