Second-alarm fire rips through known landmark in Wheeling

WHEELING, W.Va. — A second alarm fire has destroyed a known landmark in Wheeling.

Wheeling Fire Department reported a fire around 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the former WV State Fair Exhibition Hall and most recently former skating rink on Wheeling Island.

The building, which sits between Wheeling Island Casino and Wheeling Island Stadium, was currently owned by the casino and being being used as a warehouse.

The Exhibition Hall was built in 1924 and used as part of the West Virginia State Fair until much of the fairgrounds was lost in the 1936 Flood, according to records.

Wheeling Mayor Glenn Elliott issued this statement on his Facebook page Tuesday evening:

No one has been reported injured in the blaze and operations at the casino have not been impacted.

Dozens of firefighters from Wheeling have been on the scene for hours.

Wheeling Fire Department PIO Philip Stahl said the building is a complete loss.
