CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Electric utilities in West Virginia reported more than 27,000 customers without power Sunday morning following wind-whipped storms that moved through the state.
Saturday was a windy day in general with wind advisories posted for the entire state by the National Weather Service but the weather intensified by Saturday evening followed by a round of more violent storms late Saturday night and early Sunday morning.
As of 6:45 a.m. Sunday, Appalachian Power reported outages in all but one county that it serves. Kanawha County had the most customers reported outages at more than 5,000. There were more than 2,700 customers without service in Putnam County. There were between 1,000 and 2,000 customers in the dark in Cabell, Jackson, Lincoln, Logan, Mason and Wayne counties. Raleigh County had just under 1,000 customers impacted.
Mon Power reported more than 9,000 customers impacted by the storms with Wood County (2,100) and Calhoun County (1,600) leading the way.
Meteorologists were calling for a much calmer day Sunday with highs in the mid-40s.
