SPENCER, W.Va. — Spencer Mayor Terry Williams said it is difficult talking about the death of the volunteer firefighter.
“He was a great young man with a great family,” Williams told MetroNews on Sunday. “We’re in shock as much as everyone else is. It’s just hard to believe.”
Mark Horwich died Saturday while responding to a call with members of the Clover Volunteer Fire Department.
Firefighters were responding to a structure fire when Horwich’s truck went off the side of Big Sandy Road near Newton. The firetruck’s cab was crushed in the wreck.

Williams said everyone knew Horwich and his family.
“It’s a very sensitive time and you almost in some way feel helpless because you’d like to do more,” he said. “Right now, we’re just in support of that family and fireman.”
Williams requested flags be flown at half-staff starting Monday. He added arrangments will be made this week for Horwich.
“We just want to be there for them. I think they know we’re there for them,” he said.
