Satterfield’s play sparks Charleston Catholic

Aiden Satterfield has established himself as a force in his junior season at Charleston Catholic.

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Aiden Satterfield has established himself as a premier player this season — not just in Class A, but across the state.

If first-year Charleston Catholic head coach Hunter Moles is to be believed though, it won’t be long before Satterfield is regarded in an even different light.

“You do not understand what he can get to,” Moles said. “Just wait until after this summer.”

That’s not to dismiss the season Charleston Catholic’s 6-foot-5 junior is currently enjoying, which included a 22-point performance Tuesday in a 64-50 win over Greater Beckley Christian.

In the victory against the Crusaders, Satterfield displayed several facets that help make him a matchup nightmare for opposing teams.

He threw down a 180-degree transition dunk off a steal during a fast start that helped the Irish set the tempo in a game they never trailed in. Satterfield also made three three-pointers, the last of which came in the third quarter to end a GBC run at a pivotal point in the contest.

“He has a lot of skill. He just continues to get better and develop,” GBC head coach Brian Helton said. “Certainly, he had a great game. The sky is the limit for him. I’m very impressed with him as a player.”

Satterfield is averaging 22 points and has shown up in a big way against quality competition, helping lead the Irish to a 13-4 record.

In a win against Wheeling Central last month, he finished with a career-high 33 points. Satterfield also scored 32 in a victory over defending state champion Webster County. He totaled 46 points over two wins against Saint Joseph Central and posted a double-double of 19 points and 10 rebounds when the Irish dealt Cabell Midland its first loss Jan. 25.

“I’m on him so hard. Sometimes he can have a great game or score 30 points and I’ll be yelling,” Moles said. “I tell him, ‘I know you can score the ball. I want to see you do the other little things.’ He’s been doing a really good job.”

It’s been quite a jump for a player who last season averaged 12 points and as a freshman scored 12 total points in limited action at the varsity level.

With Satterfield’s success has come interest from colleges, including Marshall, Youngstown State, VMI and West Liberty.

Should he ultimately wind up playing at the next level, Moles believes Satterfield will only continue to expand his game.

“He gets a lot of respect, but I don’t think people understand how much better he can still get,” Moles said. “It’s going to be crazy.”

Moles believes Satterfield would benefit from putting on weight, which will help him play and score through contact more often. Although he already has plenty of length and solid size, adding upper body strength would make a versatile player even more dangerous.

“There are a lot of different things he can elevate, but his body is going to elevate on its own,” Moles said. “As you get more mature and in the weight room, that’s going to help his driving game and around the rim, because he’s going to be stronger. His ball-handling will get better. His defense and attention to detail will get better because I’m on him all the time.”
