MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Two West Virginia University students and another person were injured Monday after a rockslide near Monongahela Boulevard.
Eight were riding in a PRT car between the Engineering and Beechurst stations at the time of the incident. The transportation system and Monongahela Boulevard were closed because of the debris and broken cart.
“The boulder was large enough to cause significant damage to the vehicle. It then broke into several pieces and continued across the boulevard,” Morgantown Fire Chief Mark Caravasos said. “Pieces of it went through the fence and impacted a PRT car on the track.”
Two of the students in the PRT were transported to J.W. Ruby Memorial Hospital.
The state Division of Highways will determine how to best address the issue.
The roadway between 8th Street and Evansdale Drive reopened Monday evening. The PRT route between the Beechurst and Engineering stops will be closed on Tuesday. Buses will run between Beechurst and Engineering stations. There will also be pick-up spots at the Life Sciences Building and Evansdale Crossing.
