Nabors to face no discipline from SSAC over incident

BECKLEY, W.Va. — An assistant basketball coach for the Woodrow Wilson girls basketball team will not face disciplinary action from the West Virginia Secondary Schools Activities Commission for actions during the team’s recent game against Greenbrier East.

The Beckley Register Herald reports the SSAC ruled Friday Gene Nabors would face no suspensions or penalties from the governing body of high school sports over the high profile incident. Nabors and a Greenbrier East fan got into an argument in the 4th quarter of the game at Fairlea. The argument escalated into a physical confrontation with police involved. Nabors is still facing a citation for obstruction of police in the incident.

Five of the Beckley players were given two game suspensions by the SSAC for leaving their bench during the incident.

The Beckley team left the flood with just over five minutes left in the game. At the time, Greenbrier East had the lead. The decision was made this week to determine Greenbrier East the winner and the game will not be completed.

According reports Donte Nabors, the some of Gene Nabors, was cited for disorderly conduct and obstructing officers. Stephen Damon, the parent of a Greenbrier East player, was also cited for disorderly conduct.

The incident was thrust into the spotlight when Governor Jim Justice, who coaches the Greenbrier East team referred to the Beckley players as “a bunch of thugs.” Friday the Governor offered an apology if the remark was offensive, but added he regretted his choice of words received more attention than what he considered disorderly conduct by adults.
