Lincoln secures sectional title with 39-27 win over Bridgeport

SHINNSTON, W.Va. — Lincoln held Bridgeport to a season-low point total, defeating the Indians 39-27 in the Class AA, Region II, Section 1 championship game. With the win, Lincoln (17-6) will host the loser of Friday’s Braxton County-Lewis County matchup. The Indians (12-12) will travel to face the winner of that game.

The Cougars did not allow more than nine points in any quarter as they defended their sectional championship. “Victoria Sturm and Allison Rockwell did a good job on their two leading scorers,” said Lincoln head coach Rob Hawkins. “I couldn’t ask for any more out of those two. As a team, we did a good job limiting their good looks at the basket. We did a good job limiting their second shots.”

Lincoln led 11-5 after the first quarter and extended that lead to 21-13 at halftime. Bridgeport scored the first five points of the third quarter to pull within five. However, the Cougars ended the third on a 10-0 run and they kept a double-digit lead throughout most of the fourth quarter.

Rockwell led the Cougars with 18 points and Brynne Williams chipped in with a dozen. Paige Humble led Bridgeport with 10 points.

Class AA regionals are set for Thursday, March 6th and the Cougars have earned the right to host. They are 9-2 at home this season. “It is a great advantage,” said Hawkins. “That is one good thing about the system that we are in. If you win your section you get rewarded with home court. We have been lucky enough to play several regionals here and it makes a huge difference.”
