Fugitive injured after jumping from moving cruiser

ALTA, W.Va. — A fugitive from justice was injured after jumping out of a Lewisburg Police Department cruiser Friday evening on Interstate 64.

According to Lewisburg police, officers were transporting two fugitives from justice to the Southern Regional Jail at just before 6 p.m. when one of them was able to jump out of the moving cruiser through a rear window not far from the Alta exit.

Police said both prisoners were handcuffed behind their backs, shackled and were wearing seatbelts prior to the attempted escape.

The fugitive who jumped out was quickly apprehended. Police said injuries were suffered and the prisoner was taken to a hospital. The second prisoner was taken to jail.

Interstate 64 westbound was closed for a few hours until the investigation was completed. It reopened at about 8:45 p.m.

The names of the fugitives have not been released.
