DMV closes regional offices, extends expiration dates

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The West Virginia Division of Motor Vehicles tried to limit the number of people at its 25 regional offices in an effort to meet guidelines recommended by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and state health officials to guard against the potential spread of the coronavirus. The effort didn’t work.

According to DMV spokesperson Natalie Holcomb, staff removed several chairs in waiting rooms and tried to space out the ones remaining. However, offices continued to draw normally heavy crowds.

Now, all transactions will be online only for the foreseeable future.

“We are still able to do most of our transactions online and via the mail-in route,” she said.

People needing a renewal of a driver’s license or registration can do so at the DMV website through the online services portal. DMV personnel are still in the Charleston headquarters to prepare new registrations, titles or documents people may order online.

Holcomb added if you can’t get necessary work through, the DMV commissioner has signed an order to give you additional time amid the ongoing worries over the health pandemic.

“The DMV is extending the expiration date of any driver’s license, instructional permit or vehicle registration with an expiration date in March or April 2020 for three months from the date on the face of the documents,” she said.
