US Transportation Department awards $12 million for Corridor H work

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The U.S. Department of Transportation is dedicating $12 million for completing a section of Corridor H in Tucker County.

The funding, which is from the department’s Infrastructure for Rebuilding America Grant program, will be used for the unfinished section from Kerens to Parsons.

According to the office of Sen. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., nearly $150 million in federal funding has gone to the project since 2018.

“When completed, Corridor H will be the economic gateway to much of West Virginia, which is why I worked hard as Governor to open more than half of Corridor H and as Senator, I will continue to fight for West Virginia to receive the funding to complete Corridor H,” Manchin said in a release.

Sen. Shelley Moore Capito, R-W.Va., wrote to Secretary Elaine Chao in February supporting the state Division of Highway’s funding application.

“The mountainous terrain of our state creates challenges as we construct additional infrastructure, but this federal support will allow for the completion of an existing project along Corridor H in Tucker County, easing the transportation of people and goods from all across the mid-Atlantic region,” Capito said. “Secretary Chao and I spoke personally about this project today, and I am thrilled for the positive impact it will have back home.”

Gov. Jim Justice also referenced the application in a press release.

“The construction of Corridor H is going to bring us jobs, but that’s just the start of what this project will do for our state,” he said. “When all is said and done, this project is going to connect us to the entire northeast corridor, it’s going to bring us all kinds of exposure, and bring people and businesses into West Virginia like never before.”

Rep. Alex Mooney, R-W.Va., spoke highly of the announcement in a press release.

“This is great news for the people of West Virginia, as this essential project will help create jobs and fuel our economy. I will continue to work with federal, state and local officials to ensure Corridor H funding remains a priority,” he said.
