Clarksburg will be one of the new cities applying to be part of Home Rule.
Five years after it first started with four cities, Home Rule will be an option for 16 others with a new law Governor Earl Ray Tomblin is expected to sign soon.
“Clarksburg knows best about what’s going on in Clarksburg,” Mayor Patsy Trecost said of the application plans on Wednesday’s MetroNews Talkline.
“We want to be a place where people live, work and play and we’re going to do our best to make sure that our city and our community is exactly that.”
Nearby Bridgeport is already a Home Rule city along with Charleston, Huntington and Wheeling. That number could grow to 20 with the legislation lawmakers approved this month at the end of the 2013 Regular Legislative Session.
The bill does include 19 restrictions for Home Rule cities addressing more restrictive gun ordinances, marriage and divorce.
