Clay County High School Principal Melinda Isaacs says she’s very thankful for the quick reaction from first responders after she received a call Tuesday night that the school was on fire.
“The fire alarm company called me at 7:39 and there were folks on scene within seven minutes. Seven minutes tops,” Isaacs said. “There were folks here very, very quickly.”
The fire was in the corner of one of the classrooms in the school’s technical education building. Isaacs says power had been off earlier in the day on Tuesday and when it came back on there was a power surge in the computer lab.
A fire restoration company was at the school Wednesday beginning a process where every room will be cleaned. Structural engineers will take a look at the building’s steel beams for possible damage in the coming days.
Principal Isaacs says students who use the damaged building were shifted to the main classroom building for Wednesday’s school day.
Isaacs says receiving a call that your school is on fire is one a principal never wants to get but she says it could have been much worse.
“The response was miraculous,” she said.

That is why all schools should be tied into a monitoring company. If not, there would more than likely be no school left to cleanup.
