All-star coach: Williams, Macon ready for WVU

South Charleston High basketball coach Vic Herbert came away from this past weekend’s Scott Brown Memorial Classic impressed specifically by a couple of future Mountaineers.

Herbert led a roster stocked with four WVU signees to an overtime win Saturday night in Beckley.

“The other night was a blast for me,” Herbert said on the MetroNews “Statewide Sportsline” Tuesday night. “That was a once-in-a-lifetime type of thing with the loaded squad we had, and I’m so glad we got to go through that.”

West Virginia signees Devin Williams and Elijah Macon grabbed most of the headlines by combining for 45 points and 25 rebounds. Those two left the biggest impression on Herbert.

“Devin Williams is a beast,” Herbert said. “I think he’s a guy that will play right away, in my personal opinion. I think Elijah Macon is not far behind — he’s a big kid that will get minutes right away.”

Morgantown High’s Nathan Adrian finished with 13 points in the game, while Brandon Watkins added another 10 points.

“Nathan Adrian I think will play a lot of ball at West Virginia, but I’m not too sure that it’ll be early,” Herbert said. “I think the same thing of Brandon Watkins. I think he has to get bigger and stronger, but I think he will be a great Mountaineer before it’s all said and done. He may be a year or two away though.”

Martinsburg High’s Donte Grantham, who has yet to announce his college decision, was also on Herbert’s team.

“On our practice Friday night, he probably had a better practice than anybody,” Herbert said. “I was real impressed. Because of his versatility on the defensive end, he’s another kid that could get on the court early. We talked, and he kind of wants to take his visits, but I wouldn’t be too surprised to see him be a Mountaineer when all is said and done.”
