Morehead routes the Herd 85-61

MOREHEAD, KY – The Thundering Herd struggled shooting from behind the arc and defending in the paint as Morehead State rolled Marshall 85-61 Tuesday night. The 24-point margin tied the program’s worst ever loss to Morehead in 1944.

Marshall was dominated in the paint as the Eagles outscored the Herd 50-20 inside and held a huge advantage on the boards, outrebounding Marshall 45-27.

Morehead led 38-27 at halftime and put the game away in the opening minutes of the second half, scoring the first eight points of the half and extending its lead to 19. Marshall’s first basket of the second half didn’t come until Justin Edmonds connected at the 16:43 mark. However, by then the blowout was inevitable.

The deficit grew to as much as 28 points with 28 seconds left in the game.

Redshirt freshman C.J. Burks and junior Austin Loop led the Herd with 12 points apiece. Stevie Browning and James Kelly added 10 points each and Kelly grabbed eight rebounds.

Marshall’s home opener is Friday night against James Madison University. Tipoff is set for 7:30 at the Cam Henderson Center.
