Charleston police officers say a man walked away from a treatment center Friday morning and jumped off the South Side Bridge.

Officers believe the 39-year-old man was suicidal when he left the Prestera Center. Eyewitnesses saw him take off some of his clothing and jump into the Kanawha River at about 9:30.

Police say the man swam toward the south side of the river where they were able to reach him. He was taken to Charleston Area Medical Center.
