Man robbed and beaten in downtown Charleston

Charleston Police hope to find evidence that will lead them to the person or persons who attacked a Boone County man in downtown Charleston early Friday morning.

“He was obviously robbed and beaten. His wallet was lying near him, empty,” according to Chief of Detectives Lt. Steve Cooper.

Investigators say John Dolin, 37, of Peytona, was last seen shortly after midnight leaving Sam’s Uptown Cafe on Capitol Street.

“He appeared to be well and he did have cash in his wallet when he left that establishment. So we are investigating what appears to be a robbery and a malicious wounding,” Cooper said.

Police received a call around 6am of a man lying in a pool of blood in an alley in the 200 block of Capitol Street. That’s when they discovered the victim, unconscious and severely beaten.

Dolin was rushed to CAMC where he underwent surgery Friday morning. Cooper says he’s in critical condition with head trauma.

There were no signs of any weapon used in the attack. There were no bullet or stab wounds.

Police did take a call around 2:30am about a fight in the downtown area. When they went to investigate, they didn’t find anything. Cooper says there is currently nothing that connects that call to the crime but they are looking into it.

Meanwhile, the detective says his officers are canvassing the area for any evidence.

“At this point, we’re just hoping that we can retrace the steps of the victim and we could possibly find [surveillance] video or physical evidence that will link us to the suspect,” Cooper said.
