Millard: ‘I want to do great things’

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — After Tuesday’s windy workout at Milan Puskar Stadium, quarterback Paul Millard summed up his relationship with redshirt freshman Ford Childress: “I hate the kid.”

Millard was kidding, of course, though the competition is intense with the pair striving to replace Geno Smith as West Virginia’s starter.

“Me and Ford, we both understand what’s at hand and that the best guy’s going to play,” said Millard, who will be a junior next fall. “We’re both here to win games and we want great things to happen for this university and the football program.”

And how about the pressure of replacing Smith, WVU’s career passing leader and highest-projected quarterback in the NFL draft?

“Geno was a heck of a player but he’s out of here now and somebody else has got to take the reins,” Millard said. “I’m just working hard each and every day to do that. It’s a heck of an opportunity for me just to be competing for the job.”
