The Roane County woman who owned the almost 40 horses that were found either dead or severely malnourished near Reedy this month is now behind bars.

Tory Morgan, 41, turned herself in to deputies with the Roane County Sheriff’s Department on Saturday afternoon.  She was arraigned on 36 counts of animal cruelty and moved to the Central Regional Jail.

The misdemeanor charges were filed against Morgan last week.

Twenty horses were seized from her property and are now in the care of the state veterinarian.  Sixteen other horses were found dead, but investigators say, at one time, Morgan may have had more than 40 horses.

Investigators say a report about a dead horse lead them to Morgan’s property back on January 18th.
