Northern Panhandle Prep Report: Week 11
John Simonson of WWVA radio
Wheeling

Friday, Nov. 6

Brooke Bruins (9-0) at Musselman Applemen (4-5) –
Top-ranked Brooke can clinch the No. 1 seed in the upcoming Class AAA playoffs with a win over Musselman. The Bruins defeated John Marshall 34-21 last Friday and now are just a win away from their first perfect season since 1987. QB Cotey Wallace threw for 290 yards and five touchdowns. The Bruin senior is now 90-of-140 for 1,260 yards with 17 touchdowns and five interceptions. In addition, he has rushed for 700 yards and 10 scores. WRs Shane Paesano hauled in three of the scoring tosse,s while Joe DiNardo caught the other two.

Parkersburg South Patriots (6-3) at John Marshall Monarchs (2-7) – Parkersburg South and Wheeling Park did their best imitation of a video game at Wheeling Island Stadium last Friday. South eventually won in overtime, 77-71. The teams combined for 22 touchdowns, which is about one score every two minutes. Six times there was a score within 30 seconds of the previous one. Sixteen of the touchdowns were 20 yards or longer in the three and one half hour contest. Parkersburg South RB Hunter Ferguson scored seven of those touchdowns, including the game-winner. The 71 points by Park is believed to be a state record for most points by a losing team. John Marshall put forth a game effort against Brooke but fell short. Sophomore QB Aaron Fonner was brilliant once again, as he was 24-of-45 for 287 yards and a pair of touchdowns tosses. On the season, Fonner is 123-of-204 for 1640 yards with 14 touchdowns and 14 interceptions. The Patriots can clinch a playoff spot with a win.

Magnolia Blue Eagles (9-0) at Grafton Bearcats (4-5) – Magnolia can wrap up home field for three rounds of the Class AA playoffs with a victory over the defending Class AA champion Grafton Bearcats. Magnolia downed Oak Glen, 31-13, as RB Stingray Bates showed his usual late season form by rushing for 186 yards and three scores. Junior QB Justin Fox threw for 125 yards and two touchdowns. Oak Glen has completed its regular season but will still be in the postseason field. QB Seth Barnhart threw for 200 yards and a pair of scores.

Linsly Cadets (5-4) at Wheeling Central Maroon Knights (6-3) – Wheeling Central fell to big, strong and athletic Pittsburgh Brashear, 28-17, last Thursday night. Despite the defeat, Central clinched a home game for the first round of the playoffs. The Knights held a 17-7 edge at the half but ultimately could not stave off the invaders. Linsly dropped a 35-28 decision to Columbus Crusaders, a club football team consisting of players from schools in the Columbus that do not have their own football tams. Two punt returns for scores did in the Cadets. The two teams have one common opponent in Shadyside, Ohio. The Cadets lost to the Tigers 14-12, while Central blasted the Ohio playoff bound unit by 40-8.

Madonna Blue Dons (9-0) at Clay-Battelle CeeBees (9-0) – Very rarely do you see a match-up of two unbeatens in the final week of the season. But that is exactly what we have Friday night. Madonna blanked Bishop Donahue 35-0 last week, while Clay-Battelle edged Notre Dame 32-27. Madonna jumped out to a 35-0 halftime advantage, and the defense made it stand up by holding the Bishops to zero rushing yards. QB Max Nogay was a perfect 5-of-5 through the air for 120 yards and a touchdown. The Blue Dons have outscored its opponents 388-22 this year, while the CeeBees are not far behind at 407-81. The winner of this game could very well be the top seed in the upcoming Class A playoff field. The teams have comparable scores against several opponents, including Clay-Battelle’s 35-7 win over Bishop Donahue.

Bishop Donahue Bishops (6-3) at Doddridge Bulldogs (3-6) – Obviously this a must-win for Bishop Donahue. Even with a victory, there are no guarantees the Bishops will make the 16-team Class A playoff field. They still will need Matewan to lose to Man, Pendleton to Bath, Virginia, and South Harrison to Wirt. Donahue could only muster up 55 yards of offense against Madonna

Other games include:
Cameron at Valley
Weir at Tyler Consolidated
