Louisville head coach Steve Kragthorpe took a shot at Mountaineer fans this week while talking to the media in Kentucky.
"It is loud, it is a stadium they are right on top of you; they've got a rabid fan base. They all have good arms -- whether they are right-handed or left-handed -- they throw those batteries extremely well. They are extremely accurate with those, too. I'm going to have to have a hard hat when I come out of the locker room.
"They love football, they love football in Morgantown. It's a 12-o'clock nooner, so they won't be quite as tanked as they were when we were there two years ago. But, they get after it, man. They love football. I mean, they love playing football there and they love coaching football there and they love watching football there. It's a great football place. I've got friends that have gone to school there and it's a great football town."
Already, the poo-pooing has begun.
“Aw, he’s just joking.”
“It’s actually a compliment!”
“He’s right.”
And here’s my favorite, “he’s one of the funniest coaches in college football.”
Sorry, I missed his Comedy Central special.
Now, I agree this is nothing to be upset about and he was joking. It’s nothing Mountaineer fans haven’t heard before and some of it is true. But what I draw issue with is the movement, albeit small, for Mountaineer fans to cheer the opposing team as they enter the field the way UConn was cheered two weeks ago.
This is a perfect example of why that never will and never should happen again.
How can you cheer Louisville after these comments?
I’m not going to throw a hissy fit over what he said, but I’m also not going to stand and cheer for anyone who would say these things.
That’s why this whole movement to cheer the opposing team is so utterly ridiculous. Comments like these are what make sports fun. If we were all friends and sat around the campfire singing “Kumbaya” together rivalries would be decidedly less interesting.
There was nothing derogatory in Kragthorpe’s comments, some inaccuracies, but nothing downright mean, so an appropriate response from Mountaineer fans is to boo Kragthorpe and his Cardinals. It’s the cycle of life in sports. It’s the American thing to do.
Just keep your batteries in your pockets.
