The University of Charleston could soon have junior varsity sports teams at UC-Beckley.

UC announced Wednesday the school is looking into creating three sports teams for the Beckley campus to begin competitions this fall. Those sports are basketball, soccer and volleyball.

The university is looking at a men’s and woman’s team for both basketball and soccer, and only a woman’s team for volleyball.

The coaching search and recruitment of coaches and student-athletes will begin immediately.

The University of Charleston is currently exploring NCAA competition since UC-Beckley teams wouldn’t be permitted to compete in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics.

UC-Beckley is also studying the possibility of adding more junior varsity programs, as well as varsity teams, in the coming years.

UC-Charleston already fields 15 Division II teams, including men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s soccer and volleyball.
