Valley Fayette with ‘tough task’ in Region 3

SMITHERS, W.Va. — After an initial 16-1 start, Valley Fayette’s boys basketball team took on several key tests within the past week to find out just where it stands in the Class A picture. Although the Greyhounds fell to Class A defending state champion Tug Valley on Friday of last week, they were in the game, losing by three, 42-39.

After another 45-39 loss to Clay-Battelle on Saturday, the Greyhounds have bounced back with wins over Fayetteville and Sissonville to put their record at 18-3 heading into the regular season finale this weekend against Buffalo.

Expectations overall were high for this group of Greyhounds as head coach Joe McCoy returned four starters from last year’s team. It’s that veteran experience that has helped propel Valley into the top 10 this season.

“We’re very pleased on how things how things are going. The boys play pretty good team ball,” McCoy said.

Four players average double figures in scoring for Valley, led by 6-foot senior guard Raeshawn Breckenridge.

“Breckenridge is our leader,” McCoy said. “We like to get the ball in his hands because he can penetrate, shoot and he’s probably our assist leader too. He is the main key of our team to getting us going.

As for postseason play, Valley is pinned in Region 3 in Class A, along with Tug Valley and state tournament participant from last year Greater Beckley Christian who are both in the opposite section.

“It’s going to be a tough task,” McCoy said. “We’ve played each other for years and beaten up on each other. Once you get by the section, you still have Greater Beckley and Tug Valley looking on the other side of the region just to go to Charleston.”
