It’s the final go-around this weekend for the WVIAC Tournament at the Charleston’s Civic Center as the conference is set to disband this year.
Civic Center General Manager John Robertson said this brings both a frown and a smile to fans faces.
“I think people are kind of questioning what’s going to happen in the future but at the same time enjoying the tradition of the past,” said Robertson.
It’s a tradition that’s been going on for 88 years since the conference was first founded in 1924 by the West Virginia Department of Education.
On June 18, 2012, nine football-playing members of the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference announced they would withdraw from the league to form a new regional all-sports conference. That conference will be called the Mountain East.
Robertson said those with the Mountain East Conference don’t know yet where they are heading.
“I think they are still trying to make some decisions about what they plan to do, where they are going to go, what the format of a tournament may be,” said Robertson.
In the meantime, fans at the Civic Center are taking in the final WVIAC Tournament before the conference disbands on September 1, putting an end to one of the oldest conferences in intercollegiate athletics.
