New Regulation on Deer Killed in Virginia

West Virginia hunters who enjoy travelling across the state lines to deer hunt in neighboring Virginia need to be aware of a new policy.  As of this year, it is now illegal to transport the full carcass of a deer killed in the state of Virginia into West Virginia.

The new special regulations were put into effect following the discovery of Chronic Wasting Disease in Virginia last year.   It’s believed the virus is contained in the spinal column and brain tissue of infected whitetail deer and other cervid animals.  Therefore, in hopes to stopping the spread of the dreaded ailment, the DNR wants to keep those particular items where they came from.

"Hunters who harvest deer in Virginia may bring into West Virginia only the meat from which all bones have been removed, the cape, antlers or antlers and skull plate from which all meat or tissue has been removed, cervid canines and finished taxidermy heads,"  reads a DNR press release on the matter.

CWD was detected in Hampshire County, West Virginia in 2005 and similar restrictions on movement of deer carcasses out of Hampshire County are also in place.

Hunters could be stopped after crossing into the state and if the illegal deer are found in their possession could be cited and fined.

“As we strive to meet this wildlife disease challenge and implement appropriate management strategies, the support and involvement of landowners and hunters remains essential,” said West Virginia DNR Director Frank Jezioro. “The WVDNR is committed to keeping the public informed and involved in these wildlife disease management actions.”
