Eastern Panhandle Report

Musselman (5-4) at Brooke (7-2)

The Musselman Applemen went into the game last week hoping to secure a
birth in the Class AAA Playoffs.  The game against Martinsburg started
well for Musselman as they scored the first points of the game on a 15
yard run by fullback Malik Hunter.  That would be the only score of the
first quarter, Martinsburg came back and showed why they are undefeated
and the second ranked team in the state as the Bulldogs scored the next
28 points and won the game 35-14.  Martinsburg was led by the record
breaking performance of running back David Gladden who rushed for a
school record 302 yards.  Musselman did a pretty good job on the ground
as well rushing for 226 yards led by Butler who rushed for 85 yards on 16 carries and Quarterback Aron Shiley who was the leading rusher going for 86 yards on 15 carries.  It was a well played game by both teams as there were no turnovers and only 100 yards in penalties between the two teams.

So now this week, Musselman still controls their own destiny as they are 1 of about 5 teams fighting for a final playoff spot, but Musselman is the only team of the five that controls their own destiny. Sounds easy right? Win and you’re in…well the opponent is a tough one, the Brooke Bruins are 7-2 on the season and ranked 9th in the Class AAA rankings and are the 2009 Class AAA state runner up.

This year Brooke coming into the final week of the regular season is looking for a win that will probably move the Bruins into the 8th position where they would host a playoff game in the first round.  So the Bruins, like Musselman, have a lot to play for this week.  Brooke is coming off 2 straight wins where they have outscored their opponents 139-20.  Last week was a 69-13 win over John Marshall.  In that game Quarterback Alec Buchmelter went 16-20 for 235 yards and one touchdown.  On the ground the Bruins were led by Ryan Lazear who had 8 carries for 135 yards also Tim Faulkner carried the ball 9 times for 85 yards and WR Ian Morris caught 6 passes for 134 yards.  For the game Brooke gained 648 yards of total offense with 413 yards rushing.  Last year at Musselman, Brooke scored a late touchdown and came away with a 14-13 win.

Game time is set for Friday Night at 7:00pm.

Washington (3-6) at Jefferson(1-8)

The Washington Patriots went into the game last week against Hampshire
trying to bounce back from a heartbreaking 24-23 loss to Frankfort the
week before. Washington got a late touchdown pass from Quarterback Tyler Wilt to Markee Smith and pull out a 33-28 win.  With the win the Patriots secured their third win of the season, which are the most wins in the schools brief history. Washington was led by senior running back Malcom Newman who rushed for 157 yards on 32 carries and two scores.  Newman also returned the opening kick 82 yards for the opening score.  Hampshire was led by Denard Hartwell who had 114 yards on 14 carries.

This week, Washington will travel to battle the Jefferson Cougars.  Jefferson is coming off a bye week and will feature a good running back in Garrett Grantham who has had a good junior season.  Jefferson is struggling this season but is a young ball club featuring only 3 senior starters on the offensive side of the ball.  In this series of these two Jefferson County rivals Jefferson has the 2-0 advantage winning 42-7 in 2008 and 24-0 in 2009.

Gametime between Washington and Jefferson is at 7:00pm.

Berkeley Springs(1-8) at Hedgesville(3-6)

The Hedgesville Eagles are coming off a bye week, as the week before
Hedgesville got their third win of the season over the Hampshire Trojans, that win gave Hedgesville the most wins in a season since 2007 and if the Eagles can win their fourth game over Berkeley Springs it will be the most wins since 2006.  Hedgesville has been led by Quarterback Casey Horn, who has taken over for starting Quarterback Troy Markley who has an injured knee and has missed the last two games and will not be available this week as well, Horn rushed for 175 yards in the win over Hampshire as Hedgesville finished with over 500 yards of total offense.  Berkeley Springs comes into the game this week at Mumaw Stadium in Hedgesville having lost 5 games in a row and is coming off a 42-14 loss to Northern Garrett, Md. Berkeley Springs during the five game losing streak have been outscored 177-77.  Both teams will try to end their season with a win and jump start their off season training program.

Kickoff is set for 7:00pm.
