It was a strong start and a strong finish for the St. Marys Lady Blue Devil in their opening round game of the 2011 Girl’s WVSSAC State Tournament as they defeated Greater Beckley Christian 76-29.
The defending Class A runners-up finished the first quarter with a 24-2 lead. They ended the first half with a 42-12 lead and scored 29 points off turnovers at the half.
St Marys would finish the game with 49 points off turnovers. Lady Bllue Devils senior Kelsea Fickiesen says despite the large margin over victory, her team is still focused on winning a state championship.
“It’s not about how much you’re up, it’s about keeping focus,” said Fickiesen. “Anything can happen and no matter how big of a lead you get anybody can comeback.”
The leading scorer in the game was Fickiesen with 24 points. She also finished the game with 15 steals, which is a state tournament record for a single game.
Up next for the Lady Blue Devils is the winner of the Pocahontas County/Wheeling Central game on Friday at 1 p.m.
