Madonna Wins First Ever State Title

Third-seeded Madonna won the Class A state championship over top-seeded Trinity Christian 44-42 Saturday.

It’s the first ever basketball championship for the Blue Dons.

Clay Rokisky led the Blue Dons with 19 points and nine rebounds.  Chris Perna added 13 points.

At half, Madonna led 25-19, but a strong third quarter put Trinity ahead 35-33.

In the fourth, Madonna held Trinity to only seven points.  The Blue Dons took the lead for good with 4:51 left to play.

Trinity got within one with 13 seconds to play, but Clay Rokisky knocked down two free throws to put Madonna up three with 12 seconds left.

Trinity’s AJ Mayle was fouled with eight seconds left with the Warriors down three.  He hit the first then missed the second.  Trinity got a good look at the basket, but couldn’t connect on a jumper before time expired.

AJ Mayle score 17 points and nabbed seven boards for Trinity.  Chris Martinez contributed 13 points and 10 rebounds.
