The Marshall University baseball team exploded for 18 runs on 14 hits, including a two homer day off the bat of Steven Ross as the Herd doubled up St. Bonaventure, 18-9 on Friday afternoon at Epling Stadium.
All nine MU starters collected a hit and scored a run, while seven-of-nine added a RBI in the victory to improve the Herd to 7-10 on the season. The Bonnies dropped to 5-7.
Ross spearheaded the Herd bats, launching a three-run bomb in the fifth and a solo blast in the seventh as he finished his career day with the Herd 2-for-4 with five RBI.
Victor Gomez smoked a pair of hits, the first was a RBI single in the bottom of the first that made him the all-time career leader in hits at Marshall. He surpassed Adam Frederick (2003-06) and now has 252 in his time in Huntington.
Others that added to the offensive onslaught included James Lavinskas (3-for-6, two RBI), Isaac Ballou (1-for-2, three runs), Victor Ramos (triple, three runs), Thor Meeks (1-for-3, two RBI) and Kris Hecktor (1-for-3, two RBI).
The 18 runs scored by MU marked the most since a 17-1 drubbing of then No. 17 Ohio State at the Arby’s Classic Invitational in Knoxville, Tenn. (March 13, 2010).
On the mound, Shane Farrell (2-0) picked up his second win of the season, tossing the first six frames, scattering seven hits and three walks, while sending down five Bonnies by way of the K.
The Bonnies answered back in the top of the third when Austin Ingraham connected for a three-run homer to take a one-run lead entering the bottom half of the frame. The SBU advantage would be short lived as MU would score a total of 13 runs over the next three innings to cruise to the game one victory.
