Baseball Splits with Georgia Southern

After dropping a continuation game from Friday night 9-3, the Marshall baseball team bounced back to knock off Georgia Southern 5-3 to earn a split on Sunday afternoon at Epling Stadium in non-conference baseball action.

Marshall now sits at 11-18, with Georgia Southern standing at 19-13.

Gray Stafford produced a standout effort at the plate going 6-for-8 with his first collegiate dinger, collecting three hits in each game.

Game 1: Georgia Southern 9, Marshall 3
Southpaw Mike Mason fired 6.1 innings in the restarted game in his first relief appearance of the season, but the outing was spoiled as the Eagles scored twice in the first and third innings and held on for the win.

Mason finished giving up just three earned runs on six hits while punching out six with two walks.
Besides G.Stafford lacing a double and two singles, Victor Ramos scored twice and added two hits including a triple.

Game 2: Marshall 5, Georgia Southern 3
Arik Sikula came within one out of throwing a complete game as the senior fired a career-high 8.2 innings to lead the Herd to a game two victory.

His inning total marked a career-high as he added eight strikeouts and three walks. The righty allowed three runs (all unearned) off six hits and lowered his ERA to 3.07 on the season.

G.Stafford continued his hot bat, notching two infield singles before sending  a solo shot into orbit in the fifth.

MU scored a single run in each of the first five innings for their run total on the afternoon. The Eagles made the contest interesting in the ninth, scoring twice before Ian Kadish recorded the final out to secure the victory and earn his second save.

Other offensive stars included Victor Ramos (3-for-4) and Justin Maynard (2-for-3). The tandem each swiped a pair of bases in the victory.
Marshall is back on the diamond on Tuesday with a trip to Morehead State. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
