Davis & Elkins 4, West Virginia Wesleyan 2

BUCKHANNON, W. Va. – The Wesleyan baseball team finished out its three game series with Davis and Elkins this afternoon with a 4-2 defeat in ten innings. The Bobcats and Senators also played an extra inning contest in game two of Saturday’s doubleheader.

Wesleyan nabbed the first lead of the game in the bottom of the second as a Zach Miller groundout allowed Aaron Wiegel to cross the plate.

The Senators answered right back, though, tying the game win a run in the top of the third.

The game remained 1-1 until the top of the 10th when Davis and Elkins capitalized off of Bobcat errors to put three runs on the board.

Wesleyan attempted to regain control in the bottom of the 10th, but only managed one run by Gary Williams who scored off a single by Gene Franks.

Taking the loss on the mound for the Bobcats was Nathan Gainer in 2.0 innings of relief.

Starting the game on the mound for Wesleyan was Cy Mozingo. Pitching 8.0 innings, Mozingo tallied 11 strikeouts and one earned run.

The Bobcats are next in action at home on Tuesday, May 3rd against Shepherd. First pitch for the doubleheader is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.

Shepherd 9, Pitt-Johnstown 6

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. – Senior outfielder Derek Gunsell (Durand, MI/Mott CC) belted a solo homer and junior first baseman Nathan Minnich (Waynesboro, PA/Waynesboro Area) added a two-run blast in the top of the 11th inning to lift Shepherd University to a 9-6 victory over Pitt-Johnstown in WVIAC baseball action at Point Stadium on Sunday.

The Rams plated a pair of runs in the eighth and one in the ninth to force extra innings.

Freshman first baseman Morgan Lautz (Bel Air, MD/Mt. St Joseph) and freshman outfielder Dillon Berger (Lansdowne, VA/Stonebridge) each had RBI-doubles in the eighth and freshman designated hitter Nick Impellizzeri (Reston, VA/Herndon) rapped an RBI-single in the ninth.

Minnich went 3-for-6 with three runs batted in as he added a solo homer and now has 13 round-trippers on the season.

Lautz, Berger, and senior second baseman Val Arduini (Clifton, VA/Okaloosa Walton CC) each had a pair of hits for the Rams.

Gunsell scored twice and drove in a pair of runs.

Zach Martin and Drew Shaulis each had three hits to lead Pitt-Johnstown.

Junior reliever Andrew Gallant (Oak Ridge, NJ/Jefferson Twp.)  (4.0 IP, 5 Ks, 1 BB) gained the win to improve to 2-5. Jon Moore (3.1 IP, 4 Ks, 2 BB) took the loss for UPJ to fall to 1-4.

Shepherd improves to 13-20 overall, 8-16 in WVIAC play, while Pitt-Johnstown falls to 17-23, 13-13. The Rams return to action on Tuesday when they travel to West Virginia Wesleyan for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
