Johnny Thomas Leaving Basketball Team

Marshall University head men’s basketball coach Tom Herrion has announced that Johnny Thomas has chosen to forgo his final year of eligibility to pursue a professional basketball career overseas.

“We appreciate Johnny’s contributions in his one year and wish him the best as he pursues a professional career,” Herrion said.

Thomas made his mark with the Thundering Herd in just one season.  After transferring from North Carolina State, Thomas saw action in 30 games while making 17 starts.

Regarded as one of the top defenders in Conference USA, Thomas also showed his prowess on the offensive end, averaging 9.1 points per game, fourth on the team.  Marshall was 10-2 in games where Thomas reached double figures.

His top effort with the Herd came in a 30-point home win over Southern Mississippi where the junior tallied 20 points on 9-of-14 shooting while hauling in 11 rebounds.

Thomas also excelled in the classroom, recording a 3.66 GPA en route to a berth on the 2011 C-USA All-Academic Team.
