The University of Charleston has announced the addition of women’s golf as the 15th sport sponsored by the Golden Eagles athletic department. The program will join nine other West Virginia Conference schools competing in the sport beginning in Fall 2011.
UC will begin recruiting golfers for its squad immediately, and has already recruited a coach. Jim Jamieson, PGA tour winner and NCAA All-American at Oklahoma State, will be the team’s first head coach. Charleston’s men’s and women’s teams will both use Edgewood Country Club as their home course.
The University administration is excited about both the addition of the team and its leadership. “The University of Charleston has been actively seeking ways to increase opportunities for our women to participate in intercollegiate athletics. We are thrilled to add women’s golf to our list of varsity sports. We’ve found the ideal coach in Jim Jamieson. Jim is a veteran of the PGA tour, having placed in the top five several times in the Masters and PGA Championship Tournaments. Our women golfers are definitely fortunate to have the opportunity to work with such a personable coach, and one who has had so much success in their sport.”
