On Memorial Day, longtime Ohio State head football Jim Tressel announced that he is going to resign from his position. The moves comes after multiple players were suspended because they sold Buckeye memorabilia for tattoos. The Columbus Dispatch is reporting that Tressel was encouraged by the University to resign, but University officials haven’t confirmed that.
OSU Assistant head coach Luke Fickell will spend the upcoming season as the interim head coach. The University will then search for a new coach after the season is complete. In ten seasons at Ohio State, Tressel led the Buckeyes to a 106-22 record and won the National Championship in 2002.
Tressel said in a statement that he felt this was the best move for the University.
"After meeting with university officials, we agreed that it is in the best interest of Ohio State that I resign as head football coach," Tressel said in a statement Monday morning. "The appreciation that Ellen and I have for the Buckeye Nation is immeasurable."
