Much of the focus Tuesday afternoon at Thundering Herd practice was on the same position it has been all preseason – quarterback. This time everyone wanted to know how Rakeem Cato and A.J. Graham would respond after having a lackluster performance Monday against a blitzing defense.
Cato looked the part of a freshman quarterback on Monday, but Tuesday coaches saw the Cato they’ve become accustomed to seeing this preseason. Cato was adjusting to defenses and learning from his mistakes. That pleased Head Coach Doc Holliday, but on the flip side he wasn’t thrilled with his defense.
“The good news is they [quarterbacks] made a couple of plays,” said Holliday. “The bad news I didn’t like the defense today.”

The quarterback race was paired down to A.J. Graham and Rakeem Cato over the weekend, but Holliday is not close to naming a starter for September 4th just yet.
“Both of them are getting work with both groups and we’ll continue that. AJ is probably playing as good of football since I’ve been here and Cato is making plays to.”
