Eastern Panhandle Report

Martinsburg(2-0) at Handley, Va.(1-1) Saturday at 1:00pm

The Martinsburg Bulldogs used another dominating defensive performance to complete a 48-0 win over H.D. Woodson out of Washington D.C.  Martinsburg has not allowed a single point since a fourth quarter touchdown in the state semi-final game against Morgantown last season.

In last week’s game Martinsburg held the Warriors to 63 yards of total offense and gave the Bulldog offense a short field all night long.

The offense took advantage of that short field as quarterback Brandon Ashenfelter rushed for a score and also connected with junior wide-out Cedric Brown for his first touchdown pass of the season.  Martinsburg also got a defensive touchdown from Chris Perkins on a 45 yard interception return.

Running back Justin Arndt finished the game with 60 yards rushing and scored three touchdowns.

Martinsburg Linebacker Logan Jenkins became the school’s all-time leading tackler surpassing Nate Sowers.

This week the Bulldogs will go on the road for the second time in three weeks this Saturday afternoon to face the Handley Judges, a team that is coming off a 36-25 loss to Harrisonburg.  It was a frustrating loss for Handley who led 19-14 at the half but was outscored 16-0 in the fourth quarter.  Handley’s defense had a tough time stopping Harrisonburg’s quarterback Jake Durden who went 21 for 25 passing for 332 yards and four touchdowns in the game.

Martinsburg and Handley will battle Saturday Afternoon at 1:00pm

James Wood, Va.(2-0) at Musselman(1-1)

The Musselman Applemen went on the road last week to Sherando, Va. trying to build on the momentum of a week one win.  Sherando was trying to bounce back after a week one loss to another eastern panhandle team in Martinsburg.

Sherando did bounce back in a big way with a very impressive 49-21 win over Musselman.  Musselman started the game strong with a 6 play, 75 yard opening drive that ended with a touchdown pass from 27 yards out from Caleb Denbeck to Malcom Lee to take a early 7-0 lead.  Bu,t that lead did not last long–a mere 16 seconds as ‘Tre Porter took the kickoff 94 yards for a touchdown and the game was quickly tied.  Sherando went on to score the next 28 points, scoring on their first four possessions of the game.  Musselman turned the ball over twice that led to two of the scores for Sherando.

Running back Josh Ferguson led the way for Musselman gaining 72 yards on 15 carries.

This week Musselman comes back home and welcomes James Wood to town. The Colonels are 2-0 on the season and are coming off a 19-6 win over Loudon County, Va.  James Wood, like Musselman, had a impressive drive to start the game–a 16 play 73 yard drive that took seven minutes off the first quarter clock finished by a seven yard Aaron Clark run that made the score 7-0 James Wood.  James Wood’s defense held Loudon Valley to just one first down and 55 yards of total offense in the first half.  From late in the first quarter until the fourth quarter Loudon Valley had eight possessions that resulted in six three and outs and a turnover on downs.  James Wood finished the game with close to 300 yards of total offense and 215 yards of that was on the ground.

The Musselman Applemen will try to bounce back this Friday Night against James Wood, Va.  Game time is set for 7:00pm

Mountain Ridge,Md(1-0) at Hedgesville(1-1)

The Hedgesville Eagles were hoping to start the season with a 2-0 record last week but Heritage High had different plans.  Hedgesville fell behind 20-0 in the third quarter before quarterback Troy Markley scored from 44 yards out.  Casey Horn also scored a touchdown, but Hedgesville could not complete the comeback and fell 36-19 to Heritage.

Markley finished the game with good numbers for the second straight game as he went 7 for 16 passing for 109 yards and rushed for 102 yards.  Running back Casey Horn rushed for 89 yards for Hedgesville.

This week Hedgesville comes back home to take on Mountain Ridge.  The Miners are coming off a 53-33 win over Jefferson–a game that saw Mountain Ridge jump out to a 47-6 lead at the half.

Mountain Ridge was led by WVU recruit Jarrod Harper who rushed for 145 yards.

Hedgesville will try to bounce back and get back over .500 for the season but it won’t be easy against a good Mountain Ridge team.  Game time between Mountain Ridge and Hedgesville is at 7:00pm

Sherando, Va.(1-1) at Washington(1-1)

The Washington Patriots are coming off a exciting win last Saturday afternoon against Pope John Paul the Great out of Dumfries,Va. 20-14.  Washington’s Larnelle Patterson took the opening kickoff 82 yards for a score and Washington never trailed in the game.  Washington senior running back Tyrek Collier led the way with 84 yards rushing.  Quarterback Tyler Wilt completed only two passes on the day but one of those two was to Kendell Smith for a 16 yard score.

This Friday night the Washington Patriots are back at home at will face a very experienced and explosive Sherando ball club.  Sherando is coming off a very impressive win over Musselman and feature one of the best running backs in the area in Joseph Ojo, who bounced back from a slow game against Martinsburg in week one and rushed for 141 yards on 19 carries and scored three times. Ojo also caught three passes for 67 yards giving him over 200 yards of total offense.

This will be the third straight Eastern Panhandle opponent for Sherando.  Sherando and Washington will battle Friday Night at 7:00pm

Jefferson(0-2) at Millbrook(0-2)

The Jefferson Cougars will try to bounce back after another frustrating loss last week.  Jefferson fell behind 47-6 at the half to Mountain Ridge last week and lost the game by 20 53-33.  With the score 47-13 in the third quarter both teams put in their second string and Jefferson started making a comeback thanks to freshman quarterback Andrew King who ran in for one score and then threw two touchdown passes to receiver Geoffrey Walker.  Mountain Ridge was able to bounce back and secure the win.

This week Jefferson is on the road for the first time this season to take on the Millbrook Pioneers.  Millbrook like Jefferson is looking for their first win of the season.  Last week Millbrook lost to Broadway by the score of 34-7.  The offense struggled for Millbrook as they were only able to manage 84 yards rushing in the game and did not cross midfield until the fourth quarter.  Junior running back Justin Anderson led Millbrook in rushing with 77 yards on 15 carries.  Jefferson and Millbrook will battle Friday night at 7:00pm
