Volleyball Falls To Rice 3-0

Marshall volleyball completed the second match of the weekend series against Rice on Sunday and were stumped by the Owl’s offensive prowess, losing 3-0 (25-12, 25-17, 25-20).

Rice returned home 2-0 for the weekend and improved their record to 10-8 (5-2 C-USA) after the win. Marshall dropped to 3-14 overall and 2-5 in C-USA.

Rice took advantage of an explosive team attack percentage to knock of the Herd in the first two sets. Rice put away over half (.533) of the attempted attacks in the first set and finished with 16 kills and zero errors off of 30 total attacks to win the first game 25-12.

In the second set, the Owls totaled a .400 team attack percentage off of 14 kills and two errors after 30 attacks. The set ended in Rice’s favor, 25-17.

In the third set, Marshall was seemingly unable to get the ball past the Rice blockers as the Owls finished the set with 4.0 blocks (8 assists). Overall Rice was more productive at the net and finished with 9.0 blocks (18 assists) compared to Marshall’s 1.0 (2 assists). In the end, Rice took over the final set and won 25-20 to take home the victory.

At the end of the weekend, Abby Tomas recorded the most kills with 25 after finishing Sunday’s match with 12. Yoho followed with an overall of 21 and finished with nine in the final match.

Setter, Sammie Bane, had the most productive numbers of the two game series after finishing with a double-double in both matches. She finished Sunday with 26 assists and 11 digs. This marks Bane’s fifth double-double on the season in her first season with the Thundering Herd.

Marshall will get back into the mix next weekend as they face Tulane and Southern Miss. The Tulane match is scheduled for Friday, Oct. 14 at 7:00 p.m. and the SMU match will tip-off at 12:00 p.m. on Sunday.
