Courtside from WVU/Oral Roberts

Opening night for the Mountaineers as they try to shake off the loss to Division II Northern Kentucky last week.

–The first thought in watching the first seven minutes of this game tonight is that there is a night/day situation in terms of intensity in this game.   The Mountaineers came out from the opening tip playing very hard.   The Mountaineers are pushing the basketball at every opportunity and they are creating offense off the defense.

–One bit of bad news early:  Truck Bryant picked up his second foul just four minutes into the game.

–Freshman Jabarie Hines started the game at the point.   Freshman Gary Browne got the opportunity to handle the ball early as well.   Freshman Keaton Miles joined veterans Bryant, Kevin Jones and Deniz Kilicli in he starting lineup.

–The Mountaineers went right to Kilicli several times early as he had two of WVU’s first four field goals.

–The veterans (Kilicli, Jones, Bryant) scored 17 of the first 18 points.

–The intensity that lacked on defense last week is on display in abundance tonight.   The Mountaineers, in the first nine minutes, had six steals and had forced nine turnovers.   The Mountaineers have nine early points off those turnovers.

–The Mountaineers turned it over late in the first half allowing Oral Roberts to get back into the game.  WVU had a 39-35 lead at the break.   Key halftime times:  WVU shot 58% from the field as Jones, Aaron Brown and Gary Browne all hit three point shots.   The Mountaineers were outrebounded 17-12 and WVU had ten turnovers.  Jones led all scorers with 12 points.  Oral Robert’s leading scorer-Dominique Morrison-had 11 points.

–2nd half:  Kilicli picked up two fouls early.   He got his third of the game little under 3:00 into the half.

–Truck Bryant, with an assist in the first half, picked up the 300th assist in his career.

–The freshman Miles got his first points as a Mountaineer with a second half jumper.  Miles did not score in the exhibition game last week.

–The Mountaineers are blistering from the field in the second half at the second media timeout.   WVU is at 67% (8-12.)   The Mountaineers have 13 steals.   Freshman Miles and Hinds have nine of those steals.    WVU is, however, getting beaten on the boards 23-15.  Oral Roberts has 10 offensive boards.

–Freshman point guard Gary Browne has four assists and just one turnover.   He had four assists and zero turnovers last week in the exhibition game.

–Oral Roberts reduced WVU’s lead from 12 down to seven points as it stayed in the game from the foul line.    Oral Roberts was 20-26 from the line at one point as the fouls were 10-5 in favor of the Golden Eagles at the 7:00 mark.
