Women’s Hoops Hosts Miami.

Following their impressive 43 point win last time out, the Thundering Herd Women’s Basketball squad will welcome the RedHawks of Miami University to the Cam Henderson Center Wednesday for a 7 p.m. tip.

Marshall (1-0) enters the match-up looking to build off their 93-50 win against Kent State last Friday in the season opener. The Herd was aided by sprinting out to a 57-24 halftime lead. Miami (0-1) was defeated on the road at Temple in their season opener, 70-36.

The Herd put their defense into action against the Flashes, forcing 36 turnovers and grabbing 18 steals in the game. Victoria Wells led the way on the defensive side of the ball with four steals. Leandra King topped the Herd in rebounds with eight. In total, Royce Chadwick would receive a balanced effort as 11 different players recorded a take-away in the game and 10 players brought in a rebound.

On the offensive side of the ball, Marshall received points from 13 different girls with Jasmine Shaw and Shynisha Johnson leading the way with 16 apiece. Johnson was aided by draining four of five from the beyond the three point arc. Lateidra Elliott also reached double digits with 10 from the point guard position.

Miami struggled in their opener against Temple. The RedHawks did not have any players reach double digits in points and shot only 27% from the field. The Owls were able to force 26 turnovers in the game and Miami was outrebounded by 17.

The RedHawks do return all 10 of the letterwinners from last year, including junior guard Courtney Osborn, who averaged 17.3 points a game last season and junior forward Kirsten Olowinski, who averaged a double-double last year in points with 11.7 and rebounds with 11.1 a game. They led by head coach Maria Fantanarosa, who is entering her 13th year at the helm of the Miami University women’s basketball squad.

Miami holds the series advantage against Marshall, 17-3, including winning their meeting last season in Oxford, Ohio, 89-63.

You can listen live play-by-play of the game on 88.1 WMUL-FM in the tri-state area or online at marshall.edu/wmul.
